KINDERGARTEN

  • Past, Present, & Future
This two day lesson was implemented at Dodge Elementary with all five Kindergarten classes. It explores the concepts of past, present, and future through an investigation of schools and school transportation. Students practice identifying an image from the past, present, and future based on visual clues and information learned from a group reading and discussion of the books, At School: Long Ago and Today, L. Brent and When I Was Young in the Mountains, C. Rylant. Students then explore the possibilities of the future of schools through creative artistic expression. A display features the images from the past, present, and future in timeline format.

GRADE 5

  • Video Book Talks
This two day lesson was implemented at Windermere Boulevard Elementary with a group of five Grade 5 students. The lesson was collaboratively planned with the enrichment specialist, Mrs. Lindsey Bett. Each student chose a book they’d recently enjoyed to write and deliver a video book talk about. The resulting book talks were shown on the school’s morning TV announcements. They were also added to the Destiny catalog as reviews attached to the titles they represented and could be viewed through the catalog.

The video book talk lesson aims to assist students in writing a concise and persuasive review of a piece of literature they feel strongly about. The format of the video book talk and its addition to the online library catalog helps students understand that information presented in a professional and contemporary manner will be considered more seriously by others.
